Citizen Science
What is "Citizen Science"?
"Citizen Science" is a service-learning project with Nature's Notebook, a local and national phenology-monitoring program.
Phenology is the study of recurring life cycle events in plants and animals and their relationship to the environment. the USA National Phenology Network sponsors Nature's Notebook, which is a USGS funded program. Students teach and learn in the outdoors through data collection, research, teaching projects, social media write-ups, video documentation, and reflection to support a national database. The phenology database is hosted by the UofA National Phenology Network and coordinated with the local office based on the UofA campus.
The experience takes place within the Tucson Phenology Trail, a series of 22 phenology-monitoring sites across the greater Tucson area, where students record scientific observations on selected plant and animal species. The experience is primarily a community partnership between Nature's Notebook and AED 150 students. Primary Engagement Competency = Civic & Community Responsibility.
